David Chizallet, DP on "Les Anarchistes" movie

"Les Anarchistes" tells the story of a policeman who has infiltrated an anarchist community in 1900 Paris. This is Elie Wajeman’s second feature film, starring Adèle Exarchopoulos and Tahar Rahim. French DP, David Chizallet, explains the technical challenges he encountered while filming a bank hold-up scene.

“The location was huge, and shots were mainly taken with a “handheld” camera. It was clear from the beginning that we would have to light from the outside, to have free movement inside. The Alpha 18Ks in front of the windows were a logical choice : their wide spread coupled with their huge power enabled to avoid the loss of light between the window and the other side of the room. Thanks to this solution, we did not have to put any lighting fixtures inside the set.

Another challenge was the windows themselves : as the movie takes place at the beginning of the 20th century, it was essential to hide the street, the cars and the passers-by. With production designer Christelle Maisonneuve, we decided to manufacture curtains that would be both part of the set and used as diffusion for the 18Ks. The solution was a kind of dual-material curtain : the lower part was made of a lighter fabric to allow for transparency, and the upper part in a ruched fabric, mimicking the the style of that era, which will appear on the final images."
