New trend : continuous lighting for stills

Since the introduction of DSLRs, photographers have been faced with a new challenge. As photographer Dan Bannister recently explained in Resource magazine : “More and more, I’m being asked to create video content alongside stills productions for clients and, while this comes with many additional challenges that most clients aren’t aware of. […].” (1)

If photographers have long sworn only by Flashes, this new trend has forced them to review their way of lighting and their tools. Dan explains : “One way that I’ve managed to create dual content is by using continuous lighting for both stills and video. I love complex and sophisticated light set ups and there’s no reason that traditional flash set ups can’t be done with continuous lighting with some advance testing […] In my experience, it’s just not practical or effective to light the stills set ups with flash and then relight with continuous for the video so, I’ve been gravitating towards making continuous work for me in both scenarios.” (1)

Matteo Mescalchin, Italian photographer, confirms these words : “In these situations HMIs are the best choice in terms of quality and flexibility. HMI technology offers a good amount of bright, clean and totally flicker free light. Flicker free feature allows both the videographer and the photographer to work on a wide range of time exposure and shutter speeds.”

K5600 has been anticipating this phenomenon for a few years, working more and more for the photography market. To be as close as possible to the photographers’ expectations and habits, K5600 has developed photo adapters to make the Joker-Bug range to be used with the already existing light shapers. Scott Nathan, American photographer adds : "I always loved the magical quality of light you got from HMI’s but in the past they were inefficient, expensive and ran hot. Since I have been using K5600 Jokers and Alphas, I haven’t popped a strobe in months and don’t miss it a bit. With adapters I’ve been able to use all my old light modifiers from Broncolor, Profoto and Mola. [...] Continuous light was the birth of studio lighting. It’s also its future."(2)

This enthusiasm for K5600 products, comes from their design (compact and lightweight), but also from their similarity with Flashes. Matteo Mescalchin uses them regularly : “I’m a huge HMI enthusiast since the first time I’ve used a Joker Bug on the field. 10 or 15 years ago, HMI lights were not something we could use with a two people crew working on the go (too heavy, too expensive…). Joker-Bugs are performing like no others. This system is a brilliant solution as it’s a pretty powerful light source, ready to be combined with many different modifiers.
